What can we do as creative people when the news is terrifying?
We can channel our rage and fear into creation, and use writing, music, and all kinds of art to resist the status quo.
That’s what The Art of Resistance Podcast is about. Starting September 1, we’ll look to the past for artists, writers, musicians, and creative people who made art in difficult times. And we’ll see what we can learn about making art as resistance today and tomorrow.
In Season 1, we’ll talk about:
Riot Grrrl: Young women punks who used music and zines to fight misogny in the 1990s
Gran Fury: Grieving artists who used public and performance art to fight AIDS in the 1980s
Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore: Queer surrealists who used secret publications to fight Nazi occupiers on Jersey Island in the 1940s
Samizdat: Russian writers who used just the facts to fight secret arrests in the U.S.S.R. in the 1960s-70s
Emory Douglas: A black illustrator and writer who used newspaper covers to fight for the Black Panther Party in the 1960s-70s

The Art of Resistance is a podcast from Rebel Yell Creative, which is creative consulting, courses and community for good work, good art, and good people. We help community groups, small businesses and creative individuals dedicated to intersectionality and resistance build, create, and resist.
If you’re a creative looking to make art as resistance, subscribe at rebelyellcreative.com. And if you have a story about making art as resistance that we should feature on the show, one from the past, or one from today, drop a line!
The show is written, narrated, and produced by Amy Lee Lillard. I’m an author, podcaster, and queer autistic GenX woman who’s been obsessing over artists who resisted since I was a kid. And today, I’m looking to make all the weird art, and help others do the same.
